The Bay Area has more than its fair share of yoga studios, but unfortunately many of them aren’t worth visiting. They’re either overly crowded or run by people whose only goal is to sell you their yoga packages. Don’t get me wrong, the good ones are worthy of a visit, too. I’ve recently been to a couple of these studios, and that’s the tone I’m setting for this post. The goal is to provide a resource for those who want to check out some of the best yoga studios in the Bay Area, but don’t know where to begin.

I know yoga is all the rage right now, but I find it hard to integrate this ancient spiritual practice into my life. This is partly because of the lack of affordable classes in my city. Yoga studios like Movida, Studio Koola, and The Yoga Collective tend to have long waiting lists, and classes are incredibly expensive. While I love the idea of taking advantage of all the health benefits yoga offers, I can’t justify spending so much money on a class. So here are four yoga studios that offer affordable classes in San Francisco, the city that never sleeps!

San Francisco is to yoga what New York is to music and art. There are all kinds of yoga and everything in between. If you want to try every style and shape, you should go to SF. The community is huge and extensive, and it seems like everyone in SF is into yoga in some way. I would even say it is part of the SF experience and a way of life here.

Can you tell us anything about Mysore Yoga?

Mysore Ashtanga Yoga is a system of yoga taught by Vamana Rishi in Yoga Korunt. This text was passed on by Sri T. Krishnamacharya through his guru, Rama Mohan Brahmachari, in the early 1900s and was then passed on to Pattabhi Jois during his training with Krishnamacharya, which began in 1927.

The first thing you notice when you enter the Mysore room is that everyone in the series works differently. Beginners and advanced learn side by side. Some practitioners train for 20 minutes, others for 2 hours. In fact, the practice is introduced like a recipe, systematically and individually, according to the tendencies and the physical, mental and energetic capacities of the student.

What do you think makes your studio special?

I teach as my teachers in Mysore, India (the late Shri K Pattabhi Joyce and his grandson Sharath Joyce) have taught me over the years. This direct relationship and line of transmission ensures that students learn from this classic and proven approach.

When I arrived in San Francisco, there was only one Mysore program in town. There are at least five now, and maybe more. It’s a good sign when a city as progressive and creative as San Francisco accommodates all methods and styles of yoga.

What types of yoga do you teach at CorePower Yoga?

CorePower Yoga is an intense physical workout based on mindfulness yoga. We specialize in Power Vinyasa heated yoga classes and offer classes for all levels.

What do you think makes your studio special?

Our studio is special in many ways because of the amazing instructors and students that make up the CorePower community. We focus on working with students, and our teachers enjoy coming to work every day and teaching fun, consistent and inspiring yoga classes.

What kind of yoga do you teach at The Mindful Body?

We offer a wide variety of styles and methods, and all our teachers teach alignment poses as well as the inner and meditative aspects of yoga practice and philosophy. So yoga can be practiced 24 hours a day to refocus and ground us in our busy lives.

What do you think makes your studio special?

We are proud to be an independent, woman-owned studio. It really creates a strong sense of community and a place where you can be yourself. We also offer small classes, which allows us to put a lot of emphasis on individual work.

San Francisco has a very strong yoga community. You really feel like you’re part of the city’s culture. You can wear yoga pants to dinner after a workout and no one will mind.

At Laughing Lotus we teach Lotus Flow, our style of vinyasa flow, as well as meditation, relaxation, yin and mantras.

What do you think makes your studio special?

Laughing Lotus Yoga Center is a community of diverse yogis who strive to provide a sacred space that will welcome you home. Our physical and spiritual practice encourages us all to face adversity, to detoxify our environment, to start over again and again for the good of the world and others.

Hot Yoga Ocean Ave. is a yoga center. We offer different styles of hatha yoga in a heated room.

What do you think makes your studio special?

I wouldn’t call the studio special. We are a full-time yoga group that invites anyone to practice with us.

We have many resources and connections that we can use as yogis in California. We are fortunate to have this history, and we make good use of it.

What kind of yoga do you teach at Excelsior Yoga?

We teach the old school, traditional hatha. Our classes focus on asanas and also include pranayama, mantras, meditation and guided deep relaxation. The emphasis is on holding the pose with awareness and breath control. Each session is challenging and unique. No music, no power, no heat.

What do you think makes your studio special?

We’re a small private studio. The maximum capacity of our class is 18 people. While we welcome this, we are committed to helping our members develop, reach and achieve their true potential, and promote sustainable practices throughout life.

Although SF was one of the first cities in the US to spread yoga, we were the first studio to open in the Excelsior area/district in 2012. For many clients this was their first experience with yoga. We love it! We are excited to see yoga evolve and become more accessible to people of different backgrounds and abilities.

The basis of our classes is an athletic or recovery flow. We also offer themed yoga.

Our instructors! Each teacher’s approach is slightly different and offers unique touches, but they are all passionate about their practice and attentive to their students.

We teach mainly vinyasa yoga with warm-ups and add some spirituality, chanting and yoga philosophy. We try to focus on a deeper understanding of yoga, beyond the physical. Many of our teachers teach a bhakti-inspired yoga where you will hear chants and beautiful talks about Dharma.

What makes Glow so special is the variety of medical services we offer.

What do you think makes your studio special?

Our courses are designed to be accessible. MOXIE courses are intentionally free of emotional, spiritual and philosophical instruction. We just want to open the door for everyone to benefit from the physical practice of yoga.

We offer a unique style of hot yoga, and all of our instructors specialize in helping people who are new to yoga or fitness or who have chronic injuries.

What do you think makes your studio special?

Our studio is different from other studios because we focus on giving our clients the results they want in a short period of time. In addition to our unique, results-oriented yoga style, we often offer transformational programs for our members to learn how to change their eating habits and lifestyle.

San Francisco is truly a dynamic yoga center. Many interesting events, workshops, meetings, classes and yoga retreats take place here every day. Yoga in businesses, yoga in parks, yoga and mindfulness in schools…. It’s really amazing.

What kind of yoga do you teach at Ocean Beach Yoga?

We offer a wide variety of yoga styles; there is something for everyone. We offer Vinyasa and Hatha mindfulness classes that energize and strengthen the muscles. To compensate for the more intensive courses, we offer restorative courses by candlelight. We also like to take expectant mothers to prenatal yoga classes and newborns to mother and baby yoga classes.

What do you think makes your studio special?

We were the first yoga studio to open in the Outer Sunset area, and we felt the enthusiasm of our students from day one. Our coastal neighborhood is like a close-knit community in San Francisco, and that is reflected in the relationships and support you feel at Ocean Beach Yoga.

Residents of San Francisco are passionate about yoga for many reasons. This is such a positive aspect of living in a city where life can seem hectic and sometimes stressful.
